Rides We've Done in 2008

Roadie Ride - Peter's Canyon Mountain To The Sea Trail

November 16, 2008

What better way to loosen up those sore S.A.R.T. muscles than a nice spin down to the beach and back on our road bikes.

S.A.R.T. (Santa Ana River Trail)

November 15, 2008

What an adventure! Almost 4 hours of pedal crushing and 7,000' of elevation gain. We were pooped after the ride but Mike and Terri invited us to their new home for a party afterwards. Most excellent. The drive home was interesting since most of the freeways leading into the OC were closed due to the fires but we eventually got home.

Roadie Ride - Peter's Canyon Mountain To The Sea

November 9, 2008

We moseyed down the bike path from Irvine to the Newport Beach Back Bay and then down to PCH for a Starbucks break. From there we headed south to Newport Coast for a little hill climbing and wound our way back to the cars.

33 miles and 1,785' of climbing.

Peter's Canyon to the Santiago Oaks.

November 8, 2008

Unbelievably great November weather on this morning.

14.27 miles and 2,000' of elevation gain.

The Solvang Prelude 2008 Metric Century Ride

November 1, 2008

We drove the motorhome up Friday afternoon and ate dinner at Anderson's Split Pea Soup in Buellton. Ooof. Then we drank some of Greg's margaritas back in the MoHo. Double Ooof. Come Saturday morning we were so ready to attack the route. We actually did pretty well, all things considered.

64.83 miles with 4,111' of elevation gain. For only 100 kilometers, it's a tough ride.

Good times!

The Last Whiting Ranch Evening Ride For 2008

October 30, 2008

Only Mike, Greg and Dave made the ride this evening. It'll be headlights and cold riding for the coming Thursday evening Winter months. Bummer.

Thank Mike for the pictures!

Roadie Ride of the Santiago Canyon

October 26, 2008

Nothing like a girl with a 'tude. Sherri has a sprint that is absolutely on fire.

Great weather on this ride and Frits now owns a road bike. He's still holding off on the spandex thing though.

El Moro and Laguna Wilderness

October 25, 2008

Okay, it's official, El Moro is (for now anyway) our favorite Saturday ride!

Whiting Ranch Evening Ride

October 23, 2008

Next Thursday will be the last Whiting Ranch evening ride until next Spring. Dang.

Roadie Ride to the Beach and back...

October 19, 2008

We started in the Target Irvine parking lot and wound our way over to Laguna Canyon Road, down to PCH, up Newport Coast Drive, over to the Peter's Canyon Mountain to the Sea Trail and back.

35 miles with 2,000 feet in elevation gain. It was excellent!

El Moro and Laguna Wilderness

October 18, 2008

Our standard loop with Ladders added at the end.

15+ miles and 2,800 feet in elevation gain.

Whiting Ranch Evening Ride

October 16, 2008

We've got a couple more of these Thursday evening rides before Daylight Saving Time ends on November 1.

Peter's Canyon to the Santiago Oaks.

October 12, 2008

On the left - Frits parks it half way down the Chutes leaving Mike and his brother Mitch to figure a way around. God damn good times were had by all on this windy Sunday morning ride.

El Moro and Laguna Wilderness

October 11, 2008

Crystal clear this morning with stunning views to Catalina Island and beyond. The riding was quite nice too. Frits showed us a trail called Ladders that most of us had never ridden before. Awesome single track descent with a mild climb out. Very nice. Thanks Fritz!

Whiting Ranch Evening Ride

October 9, 2008

We're really going to miss our Whiting evening rides when the time changes. It'll be a long cold wait until Spring.

Lap Of The Santiago Canyon Roadie Ride

October 5, 2008

Brilliant weather and a great turnout. It was Frits' first ever road ride and he hammered it.

31 miles and 3,000' of elevation gain.

Aliso Woods

October 4, 2008

A good Saturday ride...as always.

Whiting Ranch Evening Ride

October 2, 2008

As Daylight Saving Time draws down to its seasonal conclusion we're enjoying our last few Thursday evening rides under the sunlight.

Lap Of The Santiago Canyon Roadie Ride

September 28, 2008

31 miles and 3,000 feet of elevation gain. A stout workout.

No pictures but if you click on the map it'll get you to the MotionBased page with all the GPS stats.

Peter's Canyon through the Santiago Oaks, around the Weir Loop and back.

September 27, 2008

18 miles, 3,000 feet in elevation gain, hot and humid.

John Searl joined us (and the 29er club) with his new Ellsworth Evolve he picked up from The Path the day before.

Whiting Ranch Evening Ride

September 25, 2008

Daylight is getting shorter and we have only a few of these Thursday evening rides left before it's time for the night rides.

Lap Of The Santiago Canyon Roadie Ride

September 21, 2008

Always a hammerfest.

El Moro and Laguna Wilderness

September 20, 2008

Sunny and clear conditions. Very nice.

Whiting Ranch Evening Ride

September 18, 2008

The men are boozing it up again at the bench. The sand traps along the lower section of the ride are getting a bit easier to traverse. But just "a bit."

Lap Of The Santiago Canyon Roadie Ride

September 14, 2008

No pictures but we did get the GPS stats.

Bob W, Craig E, Dave C, Greg B, John B, Sherri R and Trey H rode on this fine 32 mile ride.

Aliso Woods

September 13, 2008

Overcast weather and warm conditions made this ride really nice.

The Amtrak Century 2008

September 6, 2008

Six of us did this 100 mile road ride today from Irvine to San Diego and the conditions were perfect with overcast skies all the way to the base of the Torrey Pines climb, some 80 miles in. Somehow I knew it would get hot for that beast of a grade. Robert from Two Bros met us at the finish with the Motor Home and hauled our sore asses back to Irvine. A perfect way to end a long ride.

And okay, so I'm out of control seeing's how the last three ride page images are close-ups of my face. I hate people like me.

Whiting Ranch Evening Ride

September 4, 2008

See the August 31, 2008 ride report below. Same same.

Santa Ana River Trail Roadie Ride

September 1, 2008

Labor Day 2008. The bike path along the Santa Ana River Trail was packed. It was dangerous to say the least. We didn't even bother to ride into downtown Huntington Beach after we hit the strand. I'd rather take my chances with cars on an open road since at least they're somewhat predictable.

Whiting Ranch

August 31, 2008

It's getting a little better since it reopened on July 12th. Still lots of pedal stroke sucking sand traps. Hot and humid on this ride.

El Moro and Laguna Wilderness

August 30, 2008

Nice and cool for the first half of the ride.

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks "Lazy Loop"

August 28, 2008

Well, we skipped the Three Bitches on this evening's ride but rather wound our way around the Santiago Oaks trails. A few of us did do Big Red on the way back which got our heart rates pegged for a few moments. Dinner at Tustin Brewhouse followed.

Click on the GPS ride map on the right to go to MotionBased for the ride details.

Santiago Oaks to the Weir Canyon Loop

August 2, 2008

It had been about a year since we rode the Weir Canyon Loop. We remembered why it had been so long about half way into it...

El Moro - Laguna Wilderness

July 26, 2008

Pretty hot and very humid sums up this morning's ride. The trails are getting very soft, as Bob Walker discovered while descending into the El Moro State Park. He lost his front end on one of the faster sections which put him on the ground hard and fast. He's okay but was shook-up for a while.

Click on the GPS ride map on the right to go to the MotionBased ride details.

Mammoth Mountain Down Hill

July 18-19-20, 2008

Craig Erion, Dave Crampton, Greg Beauton, Matt Pietrantoni, Mike Bynym and Trey Hart spent three days in Mammoth hitting the trails. The weather was perfect but the trail conditions were very loose which made things a bit more interesting than usual. We had a blast.

We've posted a few videos which can be found on our YouTube site. Trey took a ton of great pictures which can be viewed by clicking on the picture on the right. Craig took some as well and can be viewed by clicking on the left picture.

Whiting Ranch reopens after nearly one year...

July 12, 2008

In August of 2007 fires raged through the Santa Ana mountains and Whiting Ranch got torched in the process. The park was closed so that repairs and regrowth could take place. At 9:00 am on July 12th the park officially reopened and we were there for the ride.

Well...there's not much of a tree cover canopy left on most parts of the trail and the trails have lost most of their character due to being graded, realigned and widened. Also there are many, many open sand pits that have to be walked through. But time will cure all of that and the park should return to its former self in a couple of years. Okay, maybe a bit longer.

Here's the GPS stats of our ride on this day.

Aliso Woods

July 4, 2008

For some reason we skipped Mathis and Dripping Cave and did Choilla twice. Go figure.

GPS right here.

FWIW, we did DH shuttle runs of Telonics Saturday, July 5th and a Roadie Ride on Sunday, July 6th.

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

July 3, 2008

Oh God this ride is getting old. Thankfully Whiting Ranch reopens on July 12 and we can return to our Thursday evening tradition of a Whiting ride followed by Wahoo's. Hopefuly the Santa Ana mountains reopen soon and we can get back in there too.

Here's the GPS skinny on this ride.

More Downhill Fun on Telonics - From the Art School

June 28, 2008

After shaking out the DH cobwebs last Saturday, we focused on Telonics runs this morning. We did three consecutive blasts down Telonics. The third was magic for all of us as we all cleared the entire run. WooHoo!

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

June 26, 2008

A very warm evening. Peter's was crowded with hikers. Thank God for bike bells.

Downhill Fun on Telonics and Stairsteps - From the Art School

June 21, 2008

Akos, Craig, Dave, Matt, Mike and Trey met at the Art School on this Saturday morning for some shuttling to the top of Aliso. We did Telonics twice and Stairsteps once. Almost everyone had a minor get-off at some point but Mike gets the award for the hardest fall, he was sore for as few days afterwards but otherwise okay. Trey took the pictures and I shot the video with my helmet cam.

SHARE Poker Ride 2008 - El Moro

June 14, 2008

The Crystal Cove Interpretive Association in cooperation with the SHARE Mountain Bike Club presented The El Moro Poker Ride. What's a Poker Ride? Ride to a minimum of 5 checkpoints throughout the park. Draw a card at each checkpoint. Awards to the top 4 and the biggest loser poker hands!

Too much fun! Kathy, Bob, Greg and myself showed up and completed this event. None of us won any poker hands but we did enjoy ourselves. We adopted a fellow "old-guy" Dave for the ride and he hung tough for the entire circuit. Naturally I logged the entire ride on my GPS.

The Fullerton Loop

June 8, 2008

The Fullerton Loop claimed yet another victim on this ride. The loop has a certain rider friendly facade that can, and will, bite you in the ass when you least expect it. This time it got John Benner when he dropped down the Courthouse stairs. John's speed got away from him and he was launched over the bars starting from the second landing up from the bottom. It was a horrific crash that resulted in broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and a puncture wound to his finger that required stitches. Very scary when you start thinking about the what could have beens...and the fact that the ride was all but over when the crash occurred.

GPS state here.

Aliso Woods

June 7, 2008

Really nice weather today. Lot's of hikers.

Here's the link to the GPS stats.

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks...Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks...Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks...Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks...Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks...

June 5, 2008

Thursday evening will find the usual OCRider.com suspects putting in a lap of Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks. Hey, it's not so bad; great workout, good semi-technical downhill and fresh Beauton margaritas served up at the top of the Bitches.

GPS!!!

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

June 1, 2008

John, Greg and Craig (me) did our standard Peter's Canyon - Santiago Oaks loop today, to keep our muscles from seizing up after yesterdays bash. John decided to do a couple of body slams, just to make sure things would stay loose. And he managed to break a chain too. Ooof.

1,800' of elevation gain and 13.64 miles. GPS stats here...

San Juan Trail with the Upper Loop

May 31, 2008

We pedaled to the top (Cocktail Rock), did the upper loop and then blasted back down. Trey Hart lead the freight train down and captured some excellent helmet cam video footage.

5,200' of elevation gain, 2 hours 45 minutes of pedaling time. Always a big ride.

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

May 29, 2008

A lovely evening for a ride...

GPS stats...

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

May 26, 2008

Memorial Day ride! Nice weather after the rain of a few days earlier. Trail conditions were excellent. Oh, and that's Kathy blowing a snot-rocket in the background. Nice!

Over 14 miles and 2,200' of elevation gain. GPS stats here.

Roadie Ride - Santiago Canyon

May 25, 2008

No pictures on this ride but Greg Beauton, John Benner and Craig Erion (me) clicked off over 31 miles and gained 3,737' of elevation. An excellent workout.

Aliso Woods

May 24, 2008

Pretty decent weather on this ride. We had some fun practicing riding up the little huck-it rock at the bottom of Rockit.

13.26 miles and 2,000 feet of elevation gain. GPS stats here.

The Ride of Silence

May 21, 2008

A slow paced, single file, silent commemoration to the riders who are no longer with us, especially those who were disabled or killed on the road. The Irvine PD coperated with traffic control for the entire 10 mile ride. All riders took a vow of silence for the entire ride to honor those cyclists silenced forever by careless motorist. http://www.sellin.com/silence/

The GPS of the route is here on MotionBased.com.

Bikes 'n Beers

May 18, 2008

And we thought it was hot yesterday at El Moro, it was smokin' hot today at the Santiago Oaks. Every year a "local bike shop" puts this great ride together. I'm guessing there were about 125 riders this year. We rode over 21 miles and gained 2,200' in elevation. After the ride we cooled off at the Tustin Brewery. Lots of fun.

El Moro and Laguna Wilderness

May 17, 2008

God damn hot today but it was a little bit cooler at the coast on this ride.

We rode 12 miles and gained 2,400 feet in elevation. See the GPS stats of this ride on MotionBased.com.

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

May 15, 2008

We were joined on this ride by father and son Sol and Jordan Hirshmann. Jordan is our youngest member at 13 and is a very, very strong rider / racer. Sol hung in there and completed the entire loop...way to go! It was a special evening for all of us.

Here's the GPS stats.

Aliso Woods

May 10, 2008

Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was... (David Bryne: Talking Heads). I guess I'm a little bored with some of our ride repeats ever since Whiting and a good chunk of the Santa Ana mountains have been shutdown post fire.

14.75 miles and 2,500 feet in elevation gain. Always a good workout.

Mountain biking is a family thing

Arroyo Trabuco Trail

April 26, 2008

John Benner put this fun ride together.

Just a friendly reminder

Aliso Woods

April 26, 2008

Up Mathis, down Rockit, up Cholla, over to Top-of-the-World, down Meadows and back to the cars. 15 miles with 2,200 feet of elevation gain.

Mike leads the way up the first Bitch

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

April 24, 2008

If it's Thursday evening you'll find us cranking through Peter's Canyon to the Santiago Oaks.

Here's the GPS stats.

San Juan Trail with the Upper Loop

April 19, 2008

Cool with some low clouds made this challenging cross country ride almost pleasant. Matt Pietrantoni brought along his buddy Fred Yeilding, and combined with Trey the three "kids" showed the rest of us the fast way to the top. Come to think of it they showed us the fast way down too.

Trey took most of the pictures on this ride.

5,600 feet of climbing over 17.66 miles makes this ride...very special. See the GPS stats.

El Moro and Laguna Wilderness

April 12, 2008

Tim Walker showed up out of the blue to ride with us. He found us on the web. Tim showed big heart on this particularly warm morning. Check out his cool old-school Bridgestone MB3! Yikes.

El Moro and Laguna Wilderness

March 29, 2008

Good stuff. John Benner took the pictures. Thanks John!

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

March 27, 2008

We were joined by Keith who is in town from Montana doing some work. Good times.

Ride stats right here.

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

March 23, 2008

I know, I know "Peter's Canyon". Sounds like a broken record. But with most of our other "regular" places being temporarly off-limits due to the fires our riding choices are somewhat limited.

GPS data of this very ride right here.

Aliso Woods

March 22, 2008

Dripping Cave and up Mathis, down Rockit, up Cholla, over to Top-of-the-World, down Meadows and back to the cars. This was the second full day of Spring, the weather was beautiful and the park had more mountain bikers, going every-which-way on the trails, than I've ever seen here before. 15 miles with 2,500 feet of elevation gain.

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks - Thursday Evening Ride

March 20, 2008

We pretty much ride nonstop from the lower entrance of Peter's Canyon to the top of the Three Bitches. It's a grind but makes the rest stop nice... or is it Greg's margaritas that make it nice. Don't matter.

GPS data of this particular ride right here.

El Moro

March 16, 2008

We started at the top and decended Nothing Better To Do, back up to Rattle Snake and down to I think I Can and back. A nice Sunday morning spin.

9.3 miles and 2,000 feet in elevation gain.

GPS data here at MotionBased.com

San Juan Trail and the Upper Loop

March 15, 2008

17 miles and 5,300 feet in elevation gain. Ooof, not for the faint of heart. GPS data right here.

Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks

March 13, 2008

Daylight Saving time kicked in early this year again and we can finally get back to our evening rides. Since Whiting Ranch is still closed we have taken to doing Peter's Canyon and the Santiago Oaks. Greg's margarita's at the top are fabulous and were worth the wait.

This ride is 14 miles long (if you do the Bitches) and gains 2,150 feet in elevation. Lovely. GPS data here.

Aliso Woods

March 9, 2008

Let's see... Dripping Cave to Mathis, down Rockit, up Cholla, over to Top-of-the-World, down Meadows and back to the cars. Almost 15 miles with 2,500 feet of elevation gain. A pretty stout ride.

GPS stats of our ride right here.

Joshua Tree National Park

February 23, 2008

Joshua Tree National Park is located in Twentynine Palms, California, in the high desert northeast of Palm Springs. At 800,000 acres it is a big piece of protected open land. We took a day trip up there this Saturday not knowing what to expect; none of us had ever been there before for mountainbiking. We booked 16.5 miles of mostly flat singletrack. We came to find out afterwards that bikes are only allowed on the roads and not on the hiking trails. Ignorance is bliss. Beautiful scenery...we'll be back.

See the GPS details of our ride on MotionBased.com.

Laguna Wilderness

February 17, 2008

Absolutely fabulous riding weather and trail conditions greeted us on this Sunday morning ride in the hills above Laguna Beach and Newport Coast.

We clocked 9.4 miles and gained 2,000 feet in elevation. See the GPS stats here on MotionBased.com.

Peter's Canyon to the Santiago Oaks and back

February 2, 2008

Heavy rains were forecast for that evening and the next day so this ride was all about getting one in before it hit.

Greg has joined the 29'er club and rode his new Gary Fisher 29'er.

GPS Stats of this ride here on MotionBased.com

Bootleg Canyon

January 19, 2008

Ryan, Joel and Matt drove out to Boulder City, NV to a little piece of Downhill heaven called Bootleg Canyon. Click here for his trip report and links to videos he shot.

Peter's Canyon to the Santiago Oaks and down the Chutes

January 20, 2008

Always a fun ride and great workout. And yup, those are cactus needles poking out of John's neck. John used his neck as a flying scythe to cut down some cactus that dared to get in his way. We performed a bit of field surgery and got many of them out but his daughter pulled out a .5" needle from the back of his neck later that evening.

14 miles and 2,200' of elevation gain. Get the GPS stats here.

Holy Jim Trail to the Main Divide and back

January 19, 2008

Our original plan was to go up Holy Jim to the Main Divide, make a right to Trabuco Trail and down. Unfortunately we were all whipped by the time we got to the Main Divide and decided to turn around and head back. I'm thinking that we still haden't fully recovered from the previous weekend's 100 mile Stagecoach Century ride.

We did manage to clock 10 miles and 3,900' in elevation gain. See the GPS stats on MotionBased.com right here.

The 2008 Winter Stagecoach Century

January 12, 2008

Grueling. But so good too. This century ride was one hell of a long day in the saddle.

Adam, Craig, Greg, John B., Mike B. and Trey drove out to Ocotillo in the motorhome on Friday afternoon and spent the night in the Ocotillo "RV Park". We drank too much that evening but what the heck, we were there to have a good time and survive the ride. We accomplished both. The weather was absolutely perfect for a mid-January day and the promoter, Shadow Tour, did a fantastic job in putting this ride on.

100 miles, 6.4 hours in the saddle and 5,600 feet in elevation gain: Get the GPS data of the ride on MotionBased right here.

Click on the image to the left to see some of the pictures that Craig shot. Click on the image to the right to download a 3 MBQuickTime movie of John Benner pulling the train up S2.

Adam shot some pictures too. See them here.

John Benner was busy taking pictures as well. See them here.
